Last homework before the final report (final report due on final's day)

Please answer the questions from the blue sheet in a blog entry. Then google German foods, drinks, customs, holidays and pick one food or drink item you want to represent in class. Blog it. I am hoping to get a cross-section of German foods to talk about. And after next Wednesday, it's all past... sniff.

Oct 3 Book review, essays on selected topics. Sept. 26 In depth topic: The First World War, All quiet on the Western front - the movie. Sept 19 The parties in Germany. Sept 12 presentations on German State. Sept. 5 meeting. Turns out that most students copy and paste what they "collected" from websites into their own blog without giving credit to the source. That is called plagiarism and we cannot continue the practice. When you find a website and you want to use information that you have reworded yourself (called paraphrasing), you have to add a number in parenthesis (1) or (2) after the paraphrased text and repeat that number at the bottom of the blog post providing the url and date visited. If you copy and paste text or images, video or sound, you are "citing" a source. That needs to be flagged writing the words "begin clip" and at the conclusion of the clip "end clip". Then a number in parenthesis (3) or (4) depending on the number of sources used. At the end of the blog post, repeat that number and provide the source url and date visited. These techniques are mandatory for work in academia. Remember: when you create a post, I expect to read what *YOU* have to say. The majority of text needs to be from you. This is not a class of copying and pasting text from google searches. It's a class where you manage content and take responsibility for the validity and accuracy of blog posts.

Aug 29 First meeting
Sept 5 Create a blog by that day, research one German State in your group of three, and post results. Prepare to present in your group. Think about how a presentation should be structured (handout, who speaks about what, etc.) We have 50 students in class ... bring at least 51 handouts.
Please check out all the resources and links below, also. On the DW site, you can watch the news, also. And find an abundance of cultural information. Many shows are in English and in German.
Attendance in Ge110 is mandatory. Please attend ;-), or take the grade cuts:-( of 5% for each meeting missed).
Be sure to initial the attendance sheet each time. With 50 students in the room, I cannot know who was present at any given meeting: I will go by the attendance list.

Be sure to obtain a copy of "All quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque and read it by the end of September.

Syllabus

The grades for this course will reflect
50% the work on your blog and posts
40% class participation and presentations
10% tests and quizzes (in case blog work isn't up to speed for a majority of students)

If we did not use tests and quizzes, the blog grade will go up to 60%. You need to attend every meeting and call if your are sick, or send an email ahead of the meeting. If you miss one meeting without prior ok or a doctor's note afterwards, your grade will be reduced by 5%. Ten% equals a full letter grade.
When posts are due, they need to be on your blog by noon on the day of class for which it was assigned. I record the presence of posts. If assigned posts are not up, your blog grade will suffer 2%-3% for each missed assignment.
